My paintings often contain some folklore and symbolism along with observations of the natural world.
Others are simply an exploration and celebration of the richness of nature.
Green Man Ogham - Watercolour
Simply put, the Celtic tree ogham is a kind of calendar as well as an alphabet, with a letter and symbol relating to each tree. Around the outside are the Celtic names for our native trees. I love the green man image, and have ideas for more variations on this.
Autumn Equinox Balance - Watercolour and fine brown pen
I like to put into my paintings the things that are in my awareness at the time. The moth on the left attached itself to my leg while I was working in our meadow. There were shield bugs (or similar) on the blackberries I harvested. And jays were swooping about, making their characteristic screeching call while gathering acorns. The yin yang represents the balance of light and dark at equinox.
Old quarry, Harrogate - Watercolour - 50cm square
Visiting a friend in Harrogate, I wandered in an old quarry near her house. This painting is an amalgam of the steep slopes, exposed roots and mysterious-looking steps that I saw there.
Autumn Beech - Watercolour and gouache
I love the way the light shines through beech leaves, and the colours change where they overlap. I also like them on a grey day, hence the border.
Awen in Stone - Watercolour
Tree Tunnel - Acrylic - SOLD
Inspiration came on a walk in Bradfield Woods, Suffolk.
Green Eye - Watercolour - SOLD
Based on this little poem I wrote. The words came to me whilst out running in the woods:
Starlight shines from those new eyes
And sees the world with true surprise.
From another time this being derives,
Bearing the wisdom of many lives.
Like a spark or emerging ember,
Here to love, grow and re-member.
Robin - Watercolour - SOLD
Wren - Watercolour - SOLD
Jay - Watercolour
One of my favourite British birds. A lot of our oak trees have grow from acorns cached by jays, intending to eat them later. The background in this painting was inspired the ancient oaks of Staverton Park, Suffolk.
Blackbird on rowan - Acrylic on deep-edged canvas
Commissioned piece, based on the client's liking for 'Blackbird on rowan', above, but this one is bigger. Acrylic on canvas.
Devil's Bit Scabious - Acrylic on deep edged canvas - SOLD
Ivy - Acrylic on deep edged canvas
Poppies - Watercolour - 50cm diameter
I went out to sketch poppies at the edge of a field, but the sun was too hot, so I lay back amongst them, and took photographs which
became the reference for this painting.
Oxeye Daisies - Watercolour and gouache - 50cm diameter
In North Norfolk I saw a field full of oxeye daisies, so took some photos as reference for this piece.
Winter Sky - Ink drawing on giclée print
Looking up at bare winter trees, late afternoon, inspired this piece.
Oak Moon - Gouache - 50cm diameter
Inspired by a walk in the woods on a moonlit winter evening.
Blackbird and harp - Watercolour - SOLD. I used to play the harp, rather badly. This painting is inspired by an occasion when, practising outside, a blackbird perched nearby and seemed to be joining in with his song.
Hare - Watercolour - Hares have symbolic connection with female fertility, so I included a 'sheila-na-gig' in the moon.
Apple - Watercolour - SOLD
Nettles - Watercolour
Though important for wildlife, we had too many nettles in our woodland in 2023, so I pulled up a lot of them. I felt a bit bad about this, so honoured them with this painting of the play of light and shadow on their shapes.
Vision of the Green Man - Watercolour
